Introduction
POLITICO Pro had recently launched a mobile app that supported news content only. Our users consistently provided feedback that they would love to see our Congressional Directory, currently accessible only on desktop or mobile web, integrated into the app for quick access when they’re heading to meetings on the Hill.
Goal
Add our Congressional Directory to the mobile app to give users on-the-go access.
Research & Competitive analysis
Looking at direct competitors is difficult because they too are behind a log-in. Since this was a directory product, I figured I’d get some inspiration from apps like Facebook or LinkedIn - directories for your friends and coworkers! This was a helpful exercise to be able to understand what types of learned search & results behavior users might expect on a mobile app.
User Flow
Design & Iterations
Since the original app only featured news, I needed to brainstorm the best way to incorporate the directory into the navigation. The existing navigation hid everything under a hamburger menu and since there were only to main features of the app, it made sense to pull them out into an exposed bottom bar navigation. This also helped give some stronger branding to the app by having a way to display our icons on every screen. If we wanted to include more products into the app, this new navigation would be flexible enough to grow.
The design process included multiple page types including search, search autocomplete, profile pages, filters, and saved items.
By looking at data usage and talking with our sales team we were able to establish what features and functionalities were essential to include as a MVP.
Results
Our subscribers loved using the new mobile app! We received positive feedback from sales demos and saw an increase in downloads to the app.
